The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
