An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from non-public details of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in positions right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other platform users also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to current affairs.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
